San Diego city crews installed new traffic signs Tuesday morning along a busy two-lane corridor in the San Ysidro community, including reduced speed limits near an elementary school.

The changes are part of the city's new Speed Management Plan, an initiative aimed at improving road safety by lowering vehicle speeds on some of San Diego's busiest streets to reduce the risk of serious traffic crashes.

The effort is part of the city's broader Vision Zero program, which seeks to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. According to city officials, the plan includes infrastructure improvements and traffic-calming measures designed to make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

While officials acknowledge that achieving zero traffic fatalities is an ambitious goal, they maintain that every traffic death or serious injury is preventable through proactive safety measures and better street design.

The speed reduction project is funded through a federal grant, allowing the city to implement the improvements without placing additional strain on its budget. The funding will support safety upgrades on approximately 20% of San Diego's highest-traffic corridors.

City leaders said additional speed management measures will be introduced in other neighborhoods as the program continues, with the goal of further improving road safety throughout San Diego.
