Record crowds anticipated for NASCAR’s first-ever races in the city could lead to major traffic delays and extended wait times

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is warning San Diego motorists to prepare for significant traffic delays on the Coronado Bridge and major downtown freeways this weekend as tens of thousands of fans travel to the city’s inaugural NASCAR event.

NASCAR San Diego will take place June 19-21 at Naval Base Coronado. Grandstand tickets for Sunday’s main event, the Anduril Race the Base 250, have already sold out, although interested fans can still join an online waiting list.

Officials are urging drivers to plan ahead, as a large influx of visitors is expected to travel to and from Coronado throughout the three-day event. As a result, heavy congestion and extended delays are anticipated on the Coronado Bridge as well as nearby roads and freeways.

Official event parking will be available exclusively on Naval Base Coronado. Attendees must present a valid government-issued ID to enter the base and possess a color-coded digital parking pass to access designated parking areas.

To help ease traffic congestion, Caltrans recommends alternative transportation options, including biking, carpooling, rideshare services, and the Coronado Ferry. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) will also provide service to the NASNI Transit Center.

NASCAR organizers cautioned that enhanced security measures and the expected record attendance could result in longer wait times for entry to the naval base.

Parking lots will open daily at 7 a.m., and the first 10,000 fans through the gates each day will receive a commemorative giveaway celebrating NASCAR’s historic debut in San Diego.

To reduce post-race traffic, organizers are encouraging fans to remain at the venue after the races and take advantage of special activities. The Fan Zone will remain open with extended hours, offering live entertainment, track access, victory lane celebrations, and a live broadcast of the Dale Jr. Download podcast.

With record attendance expected throughout the weekend, transportation officials and event organizers are advising attendees to plan their travel in advance to minimize delays and ensure a smoother experience.
